What Learn to Skate Level should I register my child for?

PROGRAM OBJECTIVE

PROGRESSION REQUIREMENTS

Parent & Child (ages 3-6, 
7-12) 

By the end of a 12-week season, participants will understand how to navigate the rink environment, enter the ice surface safely and without assistance, and move independently on their skates using basic skills of marching, hopping, turning around on the spot, falling safely and standing back up. 

At the conclusion of the program, participants will be eager to continue learning to skate, be excited to try new skills, and have a desire to progress to the next level in the Skating Programs pathway. 

To advance to Level 1, participants must be able to:

  1. Fall and stand back up without assistance
  2. Stationary marching without assistance
  3. Marching forward (at least 10 feet) without assistance 
  4. Balance on each foot without assistance (hold for at least 2 seconds)
  5. Touch knees and toes with hands without assistance

Level 1 
(ages 3-6, 
7-12, 13+)

By the end of a 12-week season, participants will understand how to 

To advance to Level 2, participants must be able to:

  1. Side-step across a line in both directions
  2. Snowplow stop
  3. Walk the width of the ice without falling
  4. March into two-foot glide across the width of the ice without falling
  5. Forward double sculling (bubbles)

Level 2
(ages 3-6, 
7-12, 13+)

By the end of a 12-week season, participants will understand how to 

To advance to Level 3, participants must be able to:

  1. Walking crossovers in both directions
  2. One-foot glide with each foot
  3. Backward sculling (bubbles)
  4. Backward snowplow stops
  5. Skate the width of the ice in a push sequence without falling
  6. One-foot side stop

Level 3
(ages 3-6, 
7-12, 13+)

By the end of a 12-week season, participants will understand how to 

To advance to Hockey Programs, participants must be able to:

  1. Forward crossovers
  2. Forward to backward transitions continuing in a straight line
  3. Forward and backward sculling (bubbles) across the width of the ice without falling
  4. Backwards skate the length of the ice without falling
  5. Two-foot parallel stop (hockey stop) in both directions
